Truist Complaint Breakdown by Product

Distribution of Truist's 23,978 complaints by product category

Finding: Truist's normalized complaint rate (5.9 per $100B) sits in the middle of the peer set, but its checking/savings share at 38% is the highest across all six banks. That concentration points to core digital experience friction, not isolated product issues.

App Store Analysis

Rating distributions and review themes across all six mobile banking apps. Headline scores cluster tightly; the 1-star share is where the differentiation shows.

Rating Distribution by Bank

1-star share correlates with churn signal strength, not just dissatisfaction volume

Login and Auth Friction
High volume / Truist over-index
MFA loops, Face ID failures, session lockouts during post-merger transitions. Truist appears at roughly 3x the mention rate vs Chase in 1-star reviews.
Truist (high) Wells Fargo
Mobile Deposit Holds
High volume / Industry-wide
Extended hold times on mobile check deposits. Truist and PNC cited most frequently. Chase offers near-instant availability for qualifying direct-deposit accounts.
Truist (high) PNC (high) Chase (best)
Zelle and P2P Disputes
Medium volume / Growing
Failed transfers, dispute resolution gaps, and fraud claim denials. CFPB issued guidance on P2P fraud liability in Q1 2026, increasing regulatory exposure.
BofA (high) Truist Wells Fargo
Spending Insights and Budgeting
Praise theme / Gap for Truist
BofA's Erica and Chase's Spend Analyzer consistently draw 5-star mentions. Truist's wealth management data exists but is not surfaced in the everyday banking flow.
BofA (best) Chase Truist (absent)
In-App AI Assistant
Emerging / BofA leads
Erica handles 2B+ interactions per year. Users call out proactive alerts, natural language balance queries, and bill reminders by name. No Truist equivalent.
BofA (Erica) Truist (absent)
Branch and ATM Locator
Neutral / Table stakes
Low-level friction across all six apps. Fifth Third's redesigned locator with real-time ATM availability gets specific praise; the others are functionally equivalent.
Fifth Third (best) Truist (parity)

Point of View

The Case for a Two-Phase Approach

Truist's 4.7 headline rating masks a structural issue: its normalized complaint rate in checking and savings is the highest in the peer set. That is a direct consequence of the BB&T / SunTrust merger, where two digital platforms were integrated rather than rebuilt. Chase and BofA used similar consolidation periods to redesign the core experience; Truist did not.

The two-phase case is straightforward. Phase one removes friction that is generating measurable complaints today — auth loops, deposit holds, Zelle disputes. These are fixable in 2-3 quarters without major architectural changes. Phase two builds the differentiated layer. Fifth Third won J.D. Power's regional bank ranking in 2025 by targeting the same friction points. Truist has a larger asset base and an existing wealth management data advantage it has not yet surfaced in the app.

38% of Truist complaints are in checking/savings, highest in peer set
3x auth-related mention rate vs Chase in 1-star reviews
0 in-app AI assistant features vs BofA's Erica (2B+ interactions/yr)
